Established on October 10, 1925. The museum is based on the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its collections. The Forbidden City was built in 1420 and served as the living and working place for 24 emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It covers an area of about 720,000 square meters, with a building area of about 150,000 square meters and 9,371 rooms. The museum houses a total of more than 1.86 million pieces (sets) of cultural relics. These relics can be divided into 25 categories, such as paintings, calligraphy, bronze ware, and gold and silver ware. Among them, precious cultural relics account for 90% of the total. There are permanent exhibitions of palace historical sites, treasures, clocks, calligraphy and paintings, ceramics, etc., as well as temporary special exhibitions. In 1961, the Forbidden City where the museum is located was listed as one of the first batch of "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units" by the State Council. In 1987, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007, the Palace Museum was rated as a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction, and in 2008, it was rated as a national first-class museum.
