China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), established on December 29, 2002, is a key state-owned enterprise under the direct management of the central government. As a critical pillar of national security and the lifeline of the Chinese economy, CSG is responsible for the investment, construction, and operation of power grids in southern China. It also participates in the development and management of cross-regional transmission, transformation, and interconnection projects.
CSG supplies electricity to five provincial-level regions — Guangdong province, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Yunnan province, Guizhou province, and Hainan province — as well as Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions. With power transmission and distribution as its core business, CSG also has five major strategic business units, namely the development of emerging sectors, international operations, industrial finance, and shared services. There are 20 departments in CSG Headquarters and the Southern China Power Control Center. CSG oversees 27 second-level subsidiaries and holds stakes in three listed companies: CSG Energy Storage Co., Ltd., CSG Energy Efficiency & Clean Energy Co., Ltd., and CSG Technology Co., Ltd. The company has a workforce of around 266,000, total assets of 1.35 trillion yuan ($188.2 billion), and an annual operating income of 853.4 billion yuan ($119.05 billion).
CSG has been graded A in corporate performance by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of China's State Council for 18 consecutive years and been given sovereign credit ratings for 10 straight years. It currently ranks 84th on the Fortune Global 500 list. Our efforts to implement the state-owned enterprise (SOE) reform were ranked top-tier in the country for three consecutive years, and CSG was the first company to be included in the China Enterprise Confederation's list of world-class enterprises.
CSG spans five provincial-level regions and is interconnected with the power grids of Hong Kong, Macao, as well as with several Southeast Asian countries. Stretching nearly 2,000 kilometers from east to west, it covers a power supply area of 1 million km2, serving a population of 273 million or 120 million customers.
We operate with an energy mix of hydropower, coal, nuclear, gas, wind, solar, biomass, pumped storage, and new energy storage, featuring AC/DC hybrid operation, long distance, large capacity and ultra-high (extra-high) voltage transmission. With complex safety and stability requirements and high technological demands, the grid’s operation and control present significant challenges.
CSG is building the New Energy System and the New Power System through green and digitized transformations. The company is a global leader in ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission technology and boasts other core technologies including UHVDC transmission, VSC HVDC transmission, large-scale grid operation and control, energy-saving and efficient grid management, large-capacity energy storage, and superconductivity.
It pioneered the world's first ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project and the first ±800 kV VSC UHVDC transmission project — both received the Special Prizes of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. Currently, the West-to-East Power Transmission initiative comprises 19 major corridors rated at 500 kV and above — including eight AC and eleven DC lines — with a total transmission capacity of 58 GW.
The company integrates into and serves the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has largely completed the construction of a modern power grid for the region, with power supply reliability ranking among the highest of major bay areas worldwide.
CSG is interconnected with Hong Kong’s power grids through four circuits of 400-kV lines and seven circuits of 132-kV lines, and supplies power to Macao via eight circuits of 220-kV lines and four circuits of 110-kV lines. These connections account for approximately 25% of Hong Kong's and 90% of Macao's total electricity consumption, ensuring stable and secure energy supply across the region.
CSG started international power cooperation in 2004 and was the first Chinese power grid enterprise to "go global". As the Chinese executive unit for power cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion, a mission authorized by the State Council, the company plays a key role in supporting the country’s broader diplomatic efforts.
CSG champions high-quality Belt and Road development, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, and investing in energy and power projects across regions including Southeast Asia, Latin America, Central Asia, and Europe. The company has prioritized cross-border grid interconnection with neighboring countries, taken the lead in establishing power cooperation mechanisms, and invested in energy projects in eight countries and regions, including Laos, Chile, and Peru. As a result, our total international business assets now stand at 84 billion yuan ($11.73 billion).
